VULPES

AVAILABILITY: OPEN

INTRODUCTION:

Vulpes is the latin word for Fox and the scientific name for true foxes. In many different regions of the world, there were fox-like entities both named or otherwise whether they were Fox demons, Fox spirits, or Fox warriors. Foxes were regarded as highly intelligent and their intelligence was either used to help humans or trick them. In Eastern-Asian countries such as China, Japan and Korea, they would be known as the popularized Kitsune. In areas such as this, the people would worship these fox-like entities, leaving offerings for them and allowing them to feed within their homes in exchange for protection and favour. There were many villages created in areas where these fox “spirits” roamed. To this day there are still shrines and small temples scattered throughout East Asia.

In other countries such as Russia, they were known tricksters, often hassling wolves; likely meaning werewolves or perhaps lycidas. Consistently throughout European countries, Vulpes were known to be weaker than the “wolf” but more cunning and much quicker. Further west, and to the south, they were regarded as messengers for gods and demigods. Still, what set these fox spirits apart from your typical fox? Their abilities. Foxfire, it was called, universally. The aurora borealis was thought to be the results of foxfire; the Finnish word “revontulet” is the name for auroras and translates to foxfire.

Vulpes are incredibly territorial.

DESCRIPTION:

  • Many Vulpes take on a humanoid form for most activities. Kitsune, specifically, seems to be the only Vulpes variation in which there can be a full transformation into a Fox.

  • A Vulpes’s fox-like appearance varies by area and many have traits that resemble different fox species.

  • A shifted Vulpes will retain a humanoid appearance but their tales will appear and fur will cover much of their body. Their legs will become animal-life and they will gain long, sharp claws.

    • Many will gain special markings on their face/bodies depending on the region they come from.

SPECIFICATIONS:

Abilities

By rubbing their tails together, Vulpes from different areas are able to perform different skills.

  • Pyrokinesis: can manipulate fire they have made themselves

  • Electrokinesis: the rubbing of their tails together can cause static electricity that they can manipulate

  • Telekinesis…: South American Vulpes have the ability to create telekinetic weapons that they often use.

  • Many Vulpes can completely mimic someone else’s voice and this trait is found more often in Kitsune, specifically.

  • Enhanced Speed

  • Enhanced strength (but not as strong as werewolves)

Advantages

  • Decelerated aging: Vulpes can live for a thousand years

  • Conditional Immortality: if a Vulpes has many tails, instead of losing their life, they may lose a tail. Vulpes can gain tails through acquiring the spirit essence of other vulpes/people or simply through time.

  • Resistant to Druid magic… a little too resistant, actually. Can become a disadvantage as it can block off their ability to be healed by druid magic.

Disadvantages

  • Going Feral: similar to werewolves, Vulpes can lose all touch with humanity; this is particularly dangerous due to their more magical abilities

  • Cannot be healed by Druid magic

  • They do not have accelerated healing while in their human forms which makes them incredibly easy to kill if caught off guard.

Ways to Kill

  • Decapitation: self explanatory

  • Ranthus overdose: too much ranthus will stop a Vulpes’s heart and they will die. rip

  • Severe physical trauma: if a Vulpes is beaten more than their body can recover, they will die

  • Anyway you can kill a human, really.

RELATIONSHIPS:

Werewolves: Have a weird instinct for getting on the nerves of werewolves or at least teasing them and being around them.
